Food initiatives at the Spoon and at Trent

The Seasoned Spoon recognizes that access to sufficient food is increasingly challenging. Alongside Spoon programs such as: Pay-What-You-Can Soup Fridays, “Spoon it Forward,” and complimentary volunteer meals, our cafe and community partnerships aim to provide all patrons with equitable access to healthy, culturally appropriate, and sustainable food, while paying our farmers a fair wage.

Addressing Food Security at the Spoon:

Pay-What-You-Can Soup: Every Friday, the Seasoned Spoon offers soup on a ‘Pay-What-You-Can’ basis. This initiative aims to provide an accessible means for students, staff, and community members to access locally-grown and nutrient-dense food.

Volunteering at the Spoon: A long-standing initiative in response to food insecurity is our commitment to providing volunteers with a welcoming and accessible environment. Volunteers receive a complimentary free meal and a hot drink at each shift.

Spoon-it-Forward: Spoon-it-Forward, is a program run in partnership with Champlain College, where patrons can purchase a $10 meal for friends, students, other faculty or just strangers to be redeemed at a later date. We invite anyone to come and redeem a meal at any time, while quantities last.

Addressing Food Security at Trent:

Trent University has a rich diversity of campus organizations, clubs and initiatives addressing issues around food sustainability, food sovereignty, and food justice from a variety of approaches and perspectives.

Breakfast Program: The Champlain Breakfast is on Thursdays from 8:30 until supplies last. Every Thursday, find baked goods, fruit, and drinks in the West Bank Colleges to help your mornings start right!  All for free, all for YOU!

TSCA One-Stop Chop Food Pantry: TCSA’s One-Stop Chop Food Pantry is Trent’s centralized on-campus food pantry. Their goal is to help relieve students of the impacts of food insecurity in an equitable, accessible, and welcoming environment. Their pantry serves over 50 students a week on an appointment-booking basis.

TCSA Grocery Assistance Program

Punch a Lunch Card: This program aims to help combat food insecurity for students throughout the academic year. This program provides students with $5 off any meal at an on-campus dining hall, including Traill College, and at The Seasoned Spoon. To make this program widely available to students, Punch-A-Lunch cards are also available at Trent International, FPHL, or your college office.
